Explore what Haydon Bridge has to offer

Haydon Bridge is a great base for exploring the many attractions of Northumberland and the wider area, as well as discovering the landscape and history of the village and its surroundings.

The village sits in the South Tyne valley very close to the most spectacular sections of Hadrian’s Wall. It is surrounded by the special and unique areas of the Northumberland National Park and the North Pennines National Landscape. It has good transport connections to the cities of Newcastle and Carlisle, and the other towns and villages of the Tyne Valley such as Hexham and Corbridge. Nearer to home, the hills, woods and valleys surrounding the village offer walks, cycle rides, and the chance to discover the hidden gems of landscape and history which locals treasure and which continue to inspire visitors.

Haydon Bridge is ‘John Martin Country’. Martin (1789 – 1854) was to become the most popular landscape artist and engraver of his time. His birthplace cottage is at East Land Ends in the village. Inspiration for his paintings came from his childhood in this area. and his larger canvases now realise millions when available for sale. Renowned poet Philip Larkin regularly holidayed here, gaining relaxation and inspiration in a little cottage by the river.
